Central Country

Oz

The strongest wizard in the world. Terse and thoughtful. Though he's a Northern wizard through and through, he was summoned as a Sage's wizard of Central Country. Centuries ago, he tried to take over the world, but he eventually decided that this was pointless. Because of that, though, he's a legendary figure among humans. Northerners that live in his domain still consider him to be like a god. When Arthur was abandoned in the North, Oz took him in. Though Oz initially only wanted to eat Arthur's mana stone, he eventually bonded with him and decided to raise him. He was trained by Snow and White alongside Figaro (Oz is the younger of the two). Oz serves as teacher of the Central wizards.

Stories:

Arthur

The son of the current king of Central Country. Intelligent and outgoing. When he was young, his mother the queen was overcome with shame from having a wizard child, and had a maid abandon him in the wilderness of Northern Country. Oz found and raised him, teaching him magic. Arthur was discovered and taken back to Central Country at age 13. With the king having fallen ill, Arthur and his uncle Vincent now lead the country. Arthur would like to see the mistreatment of wizards in Central Country cease, but is sometimes too naive on the topic, failing to acknowledge the harm that wizards have caused. Snow, White, and Figaro all helped care for Arthur as a child.

Stories:

Cain

Former captain of the knights of Central Country. Gallant and chivalrous. Raised by a single mother in the Town of Glory, a city in western Central Country. He defeated in the former knight captain Nicholas in a duel when he was only 17, after which Nicholas resigned. Cain took up his position. He hid his status as a wizard from everyone, until the Northern wizard Owen stole Cain's left eye and revealed his secret. After this, Cain was forced to resign; the Central government does not allow wizards in government-sanctioned organizations. Cain still serves as Arthur's personal guard. Cain makes friends easily, and quickly took a liking to Heathcliff when the younger became a Sage's wizard.

Stories:

Riquet

Born and raised in a reclusive religious organization. Straightforward and principled. The cult in which he was raised, which venerates the holy wizard Faust, taught him that wizards must act entirely in the service of humanity and never succumb to vice. Being summoned as a Sage's wizard prompted him to leave. He feels conflicted about whether or not he should go back and fufill what he sees as his higher purpose. Two important people keep him from doing that: Nero, who feeds Riquet better food than he'd ever eaten in his life and takes care of him like a little brother; and Mitile, who quickly became friends with Riquet and has helped teach him to read. He has no qualms about scolding anyone, even wizards much stronger than himself.

Northern Country

Snow

White's twin and oldest wizard in the world. Usually affable, but is quick to anger when other Northern wizards are involved. He and White spent their entire lives together, but when the philosopher Murr asked Snow if he knew what loneliness felt like, Snow tried to leave so that he could learn. White retaliated, and Snow killed him in self-defense. Snow used up much of his own magic to bind White's soul to his to keep him around. Of the two twins, Snow is more Western in temperament, and values the small differences between them. Snow and White together trained Figaro and Oz. They treat humans and wizards alike as their grandchildren.

Stories:

Note that many Snow stories concern White, and vice versa. To get the full story for both characters, it's best to read all of both their stories.

White

Snow's twin and oldest wizard in the world. (Or, at least, he would be, if he was alive.) Usually calm, but is quick to anger when Snow is involved. He and Snow spent their entire lives together, but when the philosopher Murr asked Snow if he knew what loneliness felt like, Snow tried to leave so that he could learn. White retaliated, and Snow killed him in self-defense. Snow used up much of his own magic to bind White's soul to his to keep him around. Of the two twins, White is more Eastern in temperament, and values all the similarities between them. Snow and White together trained Figaro and Oz. They treat humans and wizards alike as their grandchildren.

Stories:

Note that many White stories concern Snow, and vice versa. To get the full story for both characters, it's best to read all of both their stories.

Mithra

A necromancer and the second strongest wizard in the world. Aloof and languid. He has no interest in human affairs or silly things like social norms, so he often comes across as beastly (or just plain weird) to others. From childhood, he was made to ferry corpses from his village to an island in the center of the Lake of Death. The witch Tiletta found him and taught him magic, among other things. Mithra regards Tiletta as a sister. He longs to defeat Oz, eat his mana stone, and become the strongest wizard in the world. He constantly gets in fights with Bradley and Owen, and though Figaro won't fight back anymore, Mithra's not a fan of him, either. When Tiletta passed away, Mithra promised to her that he would protect her sons, Rutile and Mitile. He'd really appreciate it if the two would just sit still and stop getting intro trouble, but life isn't quite so easy.

Stories:

Owen

Unique among wizards for multiple reasons. Mysterious and manipulative. Owen's past is shrouded in mystery; as a child, he was trapped somewhere with only picture books of knights to occupy him. He escaped at some point, but lost his memories of that time. After years of hunting animals, he eventually became able to speak with them. Owen has hidden away his heart somewhere so that he's truly immortal. Unlike other wizards, who use magic from their hearts, Owen seems to power his through negative energy. When he first met Cain, he became fixated on the gallant knight and stole his eye. Owen is the only one capable of calming Heathcliff's curious affliction, and Shino is one of the few who knows of Owen's own affliction, so he has an uneasy truce with them.

Stories:

Bradley

The former leader of a gang of wizard bandits. Fierce but jovial, with a keen social intelligence. Bradley grew up with numerous siblings, who were his first gang. As he established himself in the harsh Northern Country, his gang became a place where weaker wizards who couldn't survive alone in the North could thrive together. He took Nero in as his protege, intending to have Nero take over the gang when Bradley died, but Nero couldn't stand the thought of Bradley risking his own life, and left. Bradley was then captured by the twins and Figaro, who had teamed up with humans to make an example of him. Bradley has promised to serve out his full prison sentence, but as a Sage's wizard, he still has some freedom. Bradley's one of the few who sees Mitile's potential and tries to teach him magic.

Eastern Country

Faust

A reclusive maledictor. Prickly, but with a soft side. Faust was born in Central Country, and was a key part of the revolution that founded the Granvelle dynasty alongside Lennox and Figaro. Faust was betrayed by their human compatriot, Alec Granvelle, and burned at the stake, although Alec later rewrote this legacy, and the holy wizard Faust is now venerated as a saint. Lennox helped Faust escape his execution, after which he went into hiding in the wilderness of Eastern Country. As a Sage's wizard, Faust serves as teacher of the Easterners, and this is where his soft side shows—he truly cares for his students, Heathcliff and Shino. He and Nero became easy friends, able to spend time together without worrying that they'll pry into each other's business.

Stories:

Shino

Young, but already a skilled fighter and magic user. Brash and candid. Shino is an orphan, and was forced to fend for himself for as long as he can remember. Wizards are severely distrusted in the East, and so Shino had to do dirty work to survive. He was eventually hired by the Blanchetts to guard Sherwood Forest, where he met Heathcliff. The two became friends… but not without difficulty. They still often find themselves at odds. Their former teacher tricked Shino and Heathcliff into making a promise with each other, and though neither resents the other for this, it still causes conflict. Shino considers the Blanchetts his saviors, and wants to give Heathcliff the world. Shino has an uneasy truce with Owen over Owen and Heathcliff's curious afflictions. Since Shino and Arthur are the same age and of a similar magical ability, they consider each other friends.

Stories:

Heathcliff

Son of the noble Blanchett house, a significant Eastern military and economic power. Reserved and dignified. Though his parents always accepted his wizard nature, society at large did not, and Heathcliff grew up with poor self-esteem as a result. His family took in Shino when they were young, and Heathcliff considers him his closest friend despite their frequent fights. He wishes they could have a simple relationship without status complicating it. When left to his own devices, he enjoys tinkering with clockwork machinery and other intricate crafts. He is immensely thankful to Faust for his teachings. After living at the Sage's manor for a little while, Heathcliff has become good friends with Chloe and Rutile.

Stories:

Nero

A skilled chef. Casual and self-effacing. Born in the North, he was taken on as a protege by Bradley at a young age. He rose through the ranks of the gang to become Bradley's indispensable second-in-command, but eventually became fed up with Bradley's risk-taking nature. He turned Bradley in to Snow and White, betraying him. Nero then escaped to the East, where he opened up a restaurant while pretending to be human. Nero prefers to interact with others through his food instead of his words, but he truly cares for those around him. He quickly bonded with Riquet, whom he cares for like a little brother. Nero makes food for the residents of the Sage's manor and keeps track of everyone's preferences.

Western Country

Shylock

A keen bartender. Suave, but caring. Shylock was born to a noble house, which he led for some years before it gradually lost its power. Ever since, he's tended a bar for wizards. Shylock values his own sense of aesthetics more highly than anything else, and is intelligent and principled enough that few are able to debate him and escape unscathed… One of those few was the philosopher Murr, whom Shylock would engage in spirited debates with for nights on end. Shylock fell in love with Murr because of this, but also hates Murr for his involvement in the growth of environment-destroying magical technology. When Murr's soul shattered, it was Shylock who was left to pick up the pieces, still saddled with his conflicting, unresolved feelings of love and hate. Over the years, Shylock has formed relationships with the other older wizards, including Oz and Figaro, and serves them all in his bar. In the Sage's manor, Shylock serves as the teacher for the Western wizards.

Stories:

Murr

A genius philosopher. Capricious and inquisitive. Murr fell in love with the moon long ago, but his inquiry into the Great Calamity eventually caused his soul to shatter. He's now a shadow of his former self. Murr's constant prodding and questioning of people often causes them to make dramatic decisions. He's infamous for the impact he has on people's lives. He caused the fight between Snow and White that led to White's death. Murr developed magical technology, which is now used to great effect in Western Country, which has become a center of industry. However, the technology is powered by mana stones, causing humans to go to great lengths to collect them. This has caused rampant environmental destruction through hunting and mining. Shylock hates Murr for this, but loves him for his intellect.

Stories:

Chloe

An aspiring tailor. Sociable and energetic. Chloe was born to a poor tailor's family in the slums of Western Country. He was treated terribly, kept inside and made to work, never allowed to leave. One day when Chloe was 13, Rustica visited the shop, and sensed Chloe's magic from the back room. Rustica, thinking Chloe was his bride, turned Chloe into a bird and spirited him away. Even once Rustica realized his mistake, Chloe stayed with him. Rustica has taught Chloe magic ever since, and the two are inseparable partners. Though he still thinks he has lots to learn, Chloe is already an extremely skilled tailor, and makes clothes for all the Sage's wizards. Even the most dour wizards appreciate Chloe's skills. While living at the Sage's manor, Chloe has become good friends with Heathcliff and Rutile.

Stories:

Rustica

An accomplished musician. Gentle, but completely airheaded. Rustica is extremely forgetful, and so has forgotten most of his own past. Born into the Ferch family, which was once even more wealthy than the Western royal family. Rustica is currently traveling to find his missing bride, whom he intends to turn into a bird and keep in his birdcage. Unfortunately, he's forgotten everything about his bride, and so will mistake almost anyone for her. This causes him to get into many mishaps, which Chloe usually helps him out of. The two have been inseparable ever since Rustica helped Chloe escape his abusive family. Rustica has a way of seeing the good side of every person and every situation.

Southern Country

Figaro

An ancient Northern wizard who's taken up the role of a young Southern doctor. Cunning and multifaceted. Figaro was taught magic by Snow and White alongside Oz (Figaro is the older of the two). He's been through lots in his long life—he helped Oz in his attempt to take over the world, then assisted Faust and Lennox in their revolution in Central Country. He ran from all of these situations, though, often leaving those around him wondering where he went. Figaro is extremely powerful, but has left all of this behind to live a simple life in the South. He keeps his past hidden from Rutile and Mitile. After the brothers' mother and father passed, Figaro helped take care of them. In the Sage's manor, Figaro serves as teacher of the Southern wizards.

Stories:

Rutile

A schoolteacher and artist. Sweet and kind, but with a passionate side. Rutile is the older son of the great witch Tiletta. When his younger brother Mitile was born, Rutile sacrificed half of his magic to allow Mitile to live. However, Tiletta passed away. Rutile doesn't regret it at all, and loves his younger brother immensely. Rutile teaches children the basics of reading, writing, and math. He loves art, although his preferred style isn't often… comprehensible. Nobody's faster than Rutile when it comes to flying on a broom. Since living at the Sage's manor, he's become close friends with Chloe and Heathcliff. Mithra, who was Tiletta's disciple, protects Rutile and Mitile, but Rutile causes him no end of trouble.

Stories:

Lennox

Once a soldier, now a shepherd. Quiet and stalwart. Lennox was born on the border between South and Central, and served as Faust's retainer during the revolution. He helped Faust escape when he was condemned to execution. Faust went into hiding, but Lennox looked for him for centuries. When he eventually came to the South, Figaro suggested that he settle down and stop looking, so Lennox became a shepherd. He enjoys the simple things in life, like spending time doing chores, tending his animals, and helping others. He helped look after Rutile and Mitile when their parents passed on. While living in the Sage's manor, Lennox turns his sheep small to keep them with him. Now that he's been reunited with Faust, Lennox is extremely loyal to him.

Stories:

Mitile

A bright and precocious young boy. When Mitile was born, his mother Tiletta died in childbirth, and Mitile was only saved thanks to Rutile giving up half his magic. Snow and White prophesied that Mitile would one day cause the downfall of the Southern wizards, though only Figaro knows of this. In an attempt to stop the prophecy from happening, Figaro is intentionally stifling Mitile's magical growth. He's instead encouraging Mitile's other interests, such as herbs and chemistry. Mitile still feels ashamed for being the weakest of the Sage's wizards. He became fast friends with Riquet and has helped him learn to read. Mithra is supposed to protect Mitile and Rutile, but he and Mitile don't seem to be on the same wavelength. Mitile resents Bradley's haughty Northerner attitude, but also envies his strength and occasionally gets along with him.
